Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has called on Greece to exercise caution in its defense strategies, particularly concerning its collaboration with Israel, to prevent escalating regional tensions. Fidan emphasized Türkiye’s desire for amicable relations with Greece but stressed the importance of Athens considering security concerns, notably the deployment of military resources on Aegean islands, which Türkiye claims should remain demilitarized under existing agreements.
The longstanding disputes between Greece and Türkiye over issues such as maritime boundaries, territorial waters, and the military status of Aegean islands continue to challenge their diplomatic relations. While both nations have attempted to improve ties in recent years, these unresolved conflicts linger. Greece asserts its defense actions, including its cooperation with Israel, are necessary for safeguarding its sovereignty.
Addressing broader regional dynamics, Fidan criticized Israel’s military operations in Syria, labeling them as potentially destabilizing for the region. Türkiye stands in support of Syria’s efforts to achieve security, governance, and economic development, advocating for diplomatic resolutions to regional conflicts.
Fidan also highlighted the emerging security cooperation between Türkiye, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan. The three nations are in the process of formulating the framework for their collaborative security partnership and exploring avenues to enhance cooperation. This trilateral partnership aims to address shared security concerns, including those related to Yemen and threats against Saudi Arabia, with a focus on fostering regional stability through diplomatic means.
