Tobacco remains the most significant preventable cause of cancer globally, with smoking linked to lung, mouth, throat, bladder, kidney, pancreas, and oesophagus cancers. Passive smoking also raises lung cancer risk in non-smokers. Quitting smoking can significantly lower cancer risk, with notable improvements within a few years.

Obesity is another critical risk factor associated with cancers like breast, colon, kidney, endometrial, and oesophageal. Excessive body fat can lead to inflammation and hormone changes that foster tumor growth. Regular physical activity is advised to help mitigate cancer risk, with health professionals recommending at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise weekly, such as brisk walking, cycling, or light workouts. Exercise can reduce inflammation, improve hormone balance, and support metabolic health.

Prolonged sitting poses additional risks, potentially increasing colorectal and endometrial cancer chances, even for those who exercise regularly. Diet also plays a vital role in cancer prevention. Experts suggest limiting processed meats such as sausages, bacon, and deli meats, which can raise colorectal cancer risk. High red meat consumption might also heighten bowel cancer risk. Conversely, diets rich in fiber, vegetables, fruits, healthy fats, and whole foods may lower cancer risk. Cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, kale, and cabbage contain compounds that support the body’s defense mechanisms.

Alcohol consumption is another factor, with even moderate drinking potentially raising the risk of breast, liver, and colorectal cancers. Lesser-known risk factors include excessive sun exposure, tanning beds, poor sleep patterns, long-term night-shift work, and exposure to harmful substances like radon gas. Health professionals stress that cancer prevention doesn’t require drastic changes overnight. Consistent lifestyle adjustments, such as quitting smoking, reducing processed foods and alcohol, staying active, protecting skin from sun exposure, and ensuring proper sleep, can significantly decrease long-term cancer risk.

Regular health screenings and medical check-ups are essential for early detection and prevention, according to health experts. They underscore the importance of small yet consistent lifestyle improvements in effectively lowering cancer risk over time.
