Netanyahu Insists on No Gaza Exit Until Hamas Disarms Completely

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has firmly rejected a proposal supported by the United States that would tie the withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza to a broader peace agreement. Netanyahu insists that Israeli forces will remain in the region until Hamas is entirely disarmed. According to Israeli officials, intelligence reports suggest that Hamas is actively recruiting fighters, rebuilding its military capabilities, and rearming. Israel contends that a premature withdrawal would enable Hamas to reestablish its control over Gaza and pose renewed threats to Israeli security.

The US-backed ceasefire proposal outlines several key steps, including the disarmament of Hamas, dismantling its network of tunnels, a phased withdrawal of Israeli forces, establishing a Palestinian technocratic administration, deploying an international security force, and initiating reconstruction efforts in Gaza. However, Netanyahu’s stance indicates a significant roadblock to this framework, as he prioritizes the complete disarmament of Hamas before any troop withdrawal.

Amid these diplomatic tensions, Israeli airstrikes in recent days have resulted in the deaths of at least 17 individuals, including children. A separate incident saw Palestinians conducting a mass funeral following the recovery of over 100 bodies from the rubble after a significant Israeli airstrike in Gaza City’s Sabra neighborhood. This strike occurred in November 2023, and recovery operations continue as many victims are believed to remain trapped beneath the debris.

The ongoing conflict traces back to October 7, 2023, when Hamas launched a deadly attack on southern Israel, resulting in the deaths of approximately 1,200 people and the abduction of 251 hostages. This attack has triggered the current war in Gaza, intensifying hostilities and complicating efforts toward a peaceful resolution.
