Hungarian President Tamás Sulyok has engaged in discussions with a Venice Commission delegation to address constitutional concerns that have arisen following Hungary’s recent elections. The meeting, which took place at Sándor Palace, centered on tackling the ongoing constitutional dispute affecting the country’s public institutions.
The delegation from the Venice Commission was led by its President Marta Cartabia and included Director and Secretary Simona Granata-Menghini, along with Austrian Commission member Christoph Grabenwarter. Their dialogue with President Sulyok focused on seeking solutions to the constitutional issues while ensuring adherence to European constitutional standards.
Back in May, President Sulyok took the initiative to seek assistance from the Council of Europe’s advisory body on constitutional law. He formally requested the Venice Commission to provide expert advice to resolve the constitutional challenges facing Hungary.
In response, the Venice Commission agreed to prioritize the examination of Hungary’s constitutional situation and has commenced consultations in Budapest to gather necessary information. The Office of the President of Hungary expressed appreciation for the Commission’s involvement, voicing optimism that the recommendations provided would help maintain the nation’s constitutional integrity in alignment with European principles.
