Greece is actively pursuing enhanced labor cooperation with Vietnam as well as other ASEAN nations to tackle workforce shortages and boost economic growth. This initiative was highlighted by Greek Minister of Migration and Asylum Athanasios Plevris during a recent meeting in Athens with representatives from Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines, and Indonesia. Plevris underscored that early bilateral labor agreements are essential for protecting the rights of both workers and employers, while also aiding Greece’s efforts to curb irregular migration.
The significance of migration management has grown, especially in light of the European Union’s newly implemented Pact on Migration and Asylum, according to Plevris. He recognized the importance of such agreements in addressing these challenges and expressed a strong commitment to advancing negotiations. The Greek minister has instructed relevant authorities to continue discussions with Vietnam and other ASEAN countries, aiming to expedite the formalization of labor cooperation agreements.
Vietnamese Ambassador Phạm Thị Thu Hương shared insights into the progress made since previous conversations with the Greek minister, expressing optimism that a bilateral labor agreement between Vietnam and Greece could soon be finalized. She highlighted the potential benefits of such an agreement, which would not only provide more employment opportunities for Vietnamese workers but also enhance bilateral relations between the two nations.
During the discussions, Plevris welcomed the proposal put forth by the Vietnamese delegation, indicating Greece’s readiness to forge ahead with these agreements. The collaboration is expected to pave the way for structured immigration pathways that respect legal frameworks, thereby contributing to Greece’s broader migration strategy.
Currently, Greece hosts approximately 1,700 Vietnamese workers who hold valid residence permits, according to the Ministry of Migration and Asylum. This existing workforce serves as a foundation for expanding labor ties, as Greece looks to ASEAN countries to help meet its labor market demands while ensuring mutual benefits and rights protection for all parties involved.
