Greek expatriates in Saudi Arabia have expressed pride in Greece’s military support for the Kingdom, viewing it as a strengthening of bilateral relations amid rising regional tensions. Greece has deployed Patriot air defense systems to Saudi Arabia, aimed at protecting critical infrastructure, including energy facilities along the Red Sea coast. This move underscores the growing defense cooperation between the two countries and their shared interest in regional security.
Greek residents in Saudi Arabia, such as Ioannis Barmpounis and Dimitra Chasapi, noted that Greece’s contribution holds personal significance for them. They maintain strong ties to their homeland while living in the Kingdom and emphasize the mutual trust, hospitality, and respect for family shared by Greek and Saudi societies.
On October 15, Greek Defence Minister Nikos Dendias visited the Greek Patriot air defense contingent in Yanbu, reaffirming Athens’ commitment to supporting Saudi security. During his visit, Dendias engaged in discussions with Saudi leaders on defense cooperation and regional developments. The partnership has gained importance due to concerns over missile and drone threats to strategic infrastructure.
The deployment of the air defense system provides Greece with operational experience in modern air defense while strengthening its security relationship with Saudi Arabia. Despite regional tensions, Greek expatriates feel safe in Saudi Arabia and hope that cooperation between the two nations will expand into economic, professional, and cultural fields.
Both Barmpounis and Chasapi expressed optimism that continued collaboration between Greece and Saudi Arabia would contribute to regional stability, stronger diplomatic relations, and lasting peace.
