In a recent session of the European Parliament’s Committees on Budgets and Budgetary Control, members of Hungary’s FIDESZ–KDNP delegation voiced their concerns over the European Commission’s silence on Hungary’s latest constitutional and political changes. These developments, they claim, threaten the integrity of democratic institutions within the country.
MEPs Tamás Deutsch, Csaba Dömötör, and András László urged the Commission to articulate its stance regarding several contentious issues. These include amendments to the constitution, limitations placed on political competition, adjustments affecting parliamentary mandates, and the autonomy of state institutions.
The Hungarian lawmakers pointed out that the European Commission has previously expressed concerns about the rule of law in Hungary and even withheld EU funds as a consequence. However, they noted an absence of a formal response to the most recent developments, which they argue could potentially conflict with European democratic norms.
The FIDESZ–KDNP delegation emphasized the necessity for democratic principles to be uniformly enforced across all European Union member states. During the hearing, representatives from the Commission did not offer detailed answers to the questions posed by the Hungarian delegation.
