At the U20 World Wrestling Championships in Bratislava, Hungary secured three medals in Greco-Roman wrestling, showcasing their strength in the sport. László Koppány led the Hungarian team with a silver medal performance, while Zalán Toplak and Petro Zsitovoz each claimed bronze in their respective categories.
Competing in the 130kg division, Koppány made an impressive run to the finals. He overcame challengers from China, Kazakhstan, Georgia, and Egypt, demonstrating his prowess on the mat. In the gold-medal match, however, he faced Russia’s Ali Ilyasov, a formidable opponent and reigning world and European champion. Koppány concluded the championship with a silver medal after an 8–0 defeat.
Zalán Toplak, representing Ferencváros, achieved a milestone in his wrestling career by earning his first World Championship medal. Competing in the 77kg category, Toplak entered the repechage round and secured a bronze medal with a decisive 10–2 victory over Georgia’s Giorgi Gogelashvili, ensuring his place on the podium.
In the 67kg division, Petro Zsitovoz also captured a bronze medal for Hungary. Zsitovoz faced a challenging match against Egypt’s U23 world champion Mohamed Abdelrehim. Despite an early setback, he rallied to secure an 11–3 victory in the placement match, adding another medal to Hungary’s tally.
The championships commenced with Greco-Roman wrestling, where Hungary fielded a strong team of eight athletes as part of a larger 22-member delegation. The performances in Bratislava highlighted Hungary’s continued success and dedication to the sport on the international stage.
