Péter Szijjártó, Hungary’s former foreign minister, has stepped down from his parliamentary role to join Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD. Announcing his decision via social media, Szijjártó revealed he had accepted a “highly prestigious offer” to become an executive managing BYD’s external relations and the development of new business areas. This move marks his transition from politics to a pivotal role in one of the world’s leading companies.
BYD, known as the largest producer of new-energy vehicles globally, is amplifying its footprint in Hungary through a significant manufacturing facility in Szeged. This project, hailed as one of Hungary’s major economic investments, benefited from Szijjártó’s support during his tenure in government. The company’s dominance in the electric vehicle market is evident, with over 4.5 million vehicles sold worldwide, surpassing many longstanding competitors in recent years.
