by admin477351

Greece has taken on the rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council as of October 1, marking its second and final term in this role during its 2025–26 period as an elected member. Ambassador Aglaia Balta, Greece’s Permanent Representative to the UN, is set to lead the 15-member council throughout the month.

The Security Council, under Greece’s leadership, is expected to tackle several pressing global issues. These include the ongoing war in Ukraine, escalating tension in Gaza, conflicts involving Iran and the Strait of Hormuz, the ongoing crisis in Sudan, and the deteriorating security situation in Haiti. Notably, the council will continue its involvement in Haiti, where an international security force supports efforts to manage armed violence in anticipation of upcoming elections.

Greece’s presidency comes at a critical time, aligning with discussions regarding the selection of the next UN secretary-general. The Security Council plays a pivotal role in recommending a candidate to the General Assembly, with the successor scheduled to assume office on January 1, 2027.

This period of leadership for Greece presents an opportunity to influence significant international discussions and decisions amidst a backdrop of global conflict and instability. The outcomes of these discussions could have far-reaching implications for international peace and security.
