Germany is contemplating the introduction of ticket barriers at major train stations in response to increasing concerns over violence against railway staff during ticket checks. Transport Minister Steffen Bilger suggested that implementing stricter controls at station entrances might help ensure passengers have valid tickets before they access platforms, particularly for long-distance journeys.
Currently, German train stations operate without ticket barriers, relying on railway staff to conduct ticket inspections onboard. Bilger acknowledged the challenges of introducing such barriers across the nation, given the varied development of German stations over time. However, he highlighted examples from the United Kingdom and France, where controlled access to platforms is more prevalent.
The proposal emerges amid a troubling rise in violent incidents involving train staff. In a tragic incident in February, a train conductor succumbed to injuries sustained during an assault by a passenger who was traveling without a valid ticket.
While the implementation of ticket barriers would mark a significant change in Germany’s railway operations, the initiative aims to bolster the safety of railway employees and ensure the integrity of ticketing processes.
