Hungary and US Enhance Energy and Security Ties Through New Agreements

by admin477351

Hungary and the United States have signed new agreements to enhance cooperation in energy and security sectors, following a meeting between Hungarian Foreign Minister Anita Orbán and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Washington. The agreements focus on expanding regional energy infrastructure and strengthening law enforcement ties, marking a continuation of policies from Hungary’s previous administration.

The discussions, initially delayed due to a scheduling conflict, centered on regional energy projects, including natural gas supplies, nuclear cooperation, and intelligence sharing. A key component of the energy agreement is the cooperation on regional natural gas and oil infrastructure under the US-backed Trump Peace Pipelines Framework. This initiative aims to bolster American liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports while developing energy infrastructure across Central and Eastern Europe and the Western Balkans.

The continuity of Hungary’s energy policy is evident as several aspects of the cooperation were started under the leadership of former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. During his tenure, Hungary engaged in significant energy discussions with the United States, including a civilian nuclear cooperation agreement signed in February 2026. The current government under the TISZA administration is seeking parliamentary approval to solidify this agreement.

The second agreement aims to enhance cooperation in law enforcement, focusing on intelligence sharing and combating crimes related to extremist organizations. Anita Orbán emphasized the importance of collaboration against far-left extremist groups, notably those linked to Antifa Ost. This is a particularly sensitive issue in Hungary following attacks in Budapest in 2023 involving individuals associated with such groups. These incidents have gained additional attention due to the European Parliament’s decision not to lift the immunity of Italian MEP Ilaria Salis, who is implicated in the proceedings related to the attacks.

The meeting in Washington, although delayed due to Rubio’s campaign commitments with President Trump, successfully resulted in both agreements being signed. This development underscores Hungary and the United States’ commitment to deepening their partnership in energy security and law enforcement, aligning with the strategies established under Hungary’s previous government.
