The recent state visit by UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to Germany underscores the strengthening strategic partnership between the two nations, a relationship cultivated over decades through political, economic, energy, and cultural collaborations. Diplomatic ties between the UAE and Germany were first established in 1972, and have since flourished, particularly in trade and investment sectors. Last year, bilateral trade surpassed Dh57 billion ($15.52 billion), positioning the UAE as Germany’s premier trading partner within the Gulf region.
Approximately 2,000 German companies, including notable giants like BMW, Siemens, ThyssenKrupp, and Deutsche Bahn, are operating within the UAE, illustrating the depth of economic interconnection. The energy sector has also seen heightened cooperation, with both nations collaborating on renewable energy projects, climate action initiatives, decarbonisation efforts, and ensuring energy security. In 2022, an agreement was signed to bolster energy security and industrial collaboration, encompassing UAE’s supply of liquefied natural gas to Germany and joint ventures in clean energy and climate solutions.
Beyond the realms of trade and energy, the UAE and Germany have also nurtured significant cooperation in research, technology, infrastructure, and cultural exchanges. This comprehensive partnership was formally elevated through a strategic partnership agreement in 2004, which covers a range of areas including regional security, economic cooperation, and scientific research.
Despite facing global political and economic challenges, the relationship between the UAE and Germany remains robust. Both countries continue to expand their cooperation across various strategic sectors, demonstrating a shared commitment to mutual growth and stability.
